In this post, we’ll dive into the challenges of emotional growth and healing. Together, we’ll explore how discomfort and setbacks are an essential part of the process and identify tools to help during tough moments.
Purpose:
To challenge the misconception that stress inherently makes us stronger and instead highlight that it’s our resilience—our ability to recover and learn from hardships—that fosters growth. By embracing the discomfort and setbacks of healing, we gain lessons and tools that shape our path forward, making the process valuable even when it feels difficult.
The Challenge of the Season
This holiday season has been one of the most challenging I’ve experienced personally. While every day has its highlights, some days are tougher to recover from than others. The cooler months bring their own set of challenges—less sunlight, feelings of isolation, and the weight of societal pressures to show up, shine, and keep everything together.
As a small business owner, I feel the additional weight of the season’s demands. Take Black Friday, for instance—a term rooted in the goal of moving from financial deficit (“in the red”) to profitability (“back to black”). It’s a season of working tirelessly to not only break even but to surpass expectations, all while trying to balance personal well-being.
In the midst of this whirlwind, I’ve found myself reflecting on the deeper work of healing and growth. It’s a process that’s rarely as blissful or serene as it’s often portrayed. Much like navigating the holiday season, healing can feel overwhelming, draining, and anything but linear.
Persistence Through Resilience
Yet, I persist. This persistence—along with resilience and tenacity—is what allows me to keep moving forward, even during the most challenging times. Resilience isn’t about never feeling overwhelmed; it’s about recovering, recalibrating, and finding the strength to try again.
For me, the first step in this process is always reconnecting with my body. I take a moment to observe, objectively and without judgment, where I’m holding tension. These areas of physical discomfort are often incredibly revealing, pointing to emotions or experiences I may not have consciously acknowledged.
In this exploration, I often refer to Chakras or Chakra Centers. These are the energy hubs in our bodies responsible for tasks both specific and general to our experiences. By tuning into these centers, I’ve learned to identify what I’m holding onto, where I feel stuck, and how to begin releasing what no longer serves me.
An Example of Healing in Action:
Healing often begins with simply paying attention—truly listening to what the body is trying to tell us. Take, for instance, a trigger point or tender point in the body. These are areas where, when touched, a dull, achy pain radiates from one spot to another. They’re often a signal of tension or strain that needs to be addressed.
When I’m performing massage and encounter a tender point on a client, I guide them through a simple, intentional process:
1. Inhale to the count of 4, and exhale to the count of 6.
This extended exhale helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging the body to relax.
2. Breathe through the discomfort, 6-9 repetitions.
While they breathe, I work on the point with just enough pressure to address it—no more than a 7 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of discomfort.
Often, all it takes is 60-90 seconds of focused attention to alleviate a trigger point. The discomfort begins to dissipate as the body feels validated and supported. Beyond the physical release, this process helps uncover the underlying reasons the tension existed in the first place. This is nearly the exact same format for alleviating or transmuting emotional triggers!
Healing isn’t about avoiding pain; it’s about moving through it with intention. When we give discomfort the attention it’s asking for, we can not only relieve it but also gather the wisdom it offers. This understanding allows us to move forward, healed and wiser, with a better chance of preventing the same issues from reoccurring.
Giving Yourself Space to Recover
Whether we’re addressing physical or emotional triggers, the process of recovery is remarkably similar. In massage and energy healing, just as in bodybuilding or fitness training, rest and recalibration are essential for growth.
Bodybuilders know that muscles need time to heal and grow after experiencing stress during workouts. Without rest, the body can’t repair itself, leading to strain or stalled progress. The same principle applies to healing. After a deep massage or an enlightening energy session, your body and mind need time to process what’s been released, just like muscles need rest to rebuild stronger.
Growth, by nature, is uncomfortable. It stretches us beyond our comfort zones, bringing up emotions or memories we may not feel ready to face. Sometimes, it feels like we’re moving backward. But these moments are opportunities to reassess, adjust, and ultimately emerge stronger and wiser.
Giving yourself space to recover might look like carving out quiet time after a session, journaling your reflections, or simply allowing yourself to rest without guilt. Recovery isn’t an afterthought—it’s an essential part of the healing process, where true transformation happens.
Wellness is Work, and You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
The truth is, wellness is work. It takes time, energy, and commitment to show up for yourself, especially during challenging seasons. As a professional space-holder, my role is to meet you where you are, help you feel understood, and guide you at a pace that feels right for you.
Learning to celebrate the small wins along the way—like acknowledging even minor transformations—helps reduce the likelihood of setbacks. Each win builds momentum, creating a foundation of confidence and resilience.
Equally important is getting clear on your goals and taking aligned action to support them. For me, this is where massage therapy meets coaching. A coach isn’t someone who takes the steps for you; they empower you to build core confidence and encourage you to take one manageable step at a time.
Tools to Navigate Tough Moments
When healing feels challenging, these mindful practices can help:
Body Scan Meditation
• Find a quiet space to sit or lie down comfortably.
• Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
• Slowly bring your attention to each part of your body, starting at the top of your head and moving downward to your toes.
• As you focus on each area, observe any sensations or tension without judgment. Breathe into those spaces and imagine releasing the discomfort with each exhale.
Journaling Your Wins
Reflect on small victories, like taking time to breathe or acknowledging a challenging emotion. Writing down one thing you did well each day can help you see progress even on tough days.
